Is it true you can only get one free credit report per year?

07 Jun

I’m confused. I’m looking to get my first mortgage and honestly haven’t needed to have a credit report before. My friend told me you can only get one free each year, is this true?

You can get one free report from each of the three main credit report companies each year, so if you space those requests out, you can get a report every 4 months. The reports should generally have the same info, but may have slight variations.

One free per year, PER reporting agency. In total, you get THREE free reports per year.

But you have to remember, all you get with these reports is the information on your credit history from each of the main companies. You do NOT get your “credit score” with these reports.

It is still good to get these yearly reports from EACH of the companies. You can review your credit activity as it is reported to them. The information should be SIMILAR, but not particulary identical. Only YOU can identify any of that activity as legitimate. Only YOU can catch it if someone else is using your good credit in fraudulent ways.

That’s why some people find it is worth the twenty to thirty bucks a month to subscribe to those credit reporting comanies. That way, they can keep up to date on credit activites constantly, instead of depending on those free, annual reports. If someone steals your credit card number eleven months ago to make an unauthorized purchase, it may be too late to do anything about it.

I have two close relatives that work within the banking industry. One of them with the VISA fraud investigation department. They know the risks. BOTH of them subscribe to monthy credit watch companies. By the way, there are a LOT of fraudulent credit protection schemes so you have to be careful. Just FYI, those two relative in the banking industry use freecreditreport.com . The same one that advertises on TV.

You get one free report from each of the three credit bureaus. In some states, you get can get two from each credit bureau. Reports are free, scores are not.

You can purchase your FICO score from Equifax for about $8 when you get your free report. You can also get FICO scores for TransUnion and Equifax at MyFico.com. Consumers can no longer get FICO scores for Experian. The TransUnion and Experian sites will sell you Vantage scores — save your money. Third party monitoring sites use fakko scores.

CreditKarma.com offers a free score estimator based on our TransUnion credit report. It’s not FICO. But it’s kinda, sorta like FICO, give or take 50 points or so. Good enough if you are just curious as to what your score is.

It is a good idea to pull a credit report and check it for accuracy before you apply for that mortgage. If there are any derogatory items, mortgage companies will require you settle them.

There are 3 credit bureaus who will give you your credit report for free. They are Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. You can check your credit report once a year, once at each agency, for free. It will show your debts, loans, mortgages, credit cards, etc.

You will need a secure internet connection and all your personal information to verify your identity and see your report. It also recommends to print the report, so you can save the information.

Remember, though, that these agencies give your credit Report, not the credit SCORE. A FICO credit score is the number you see from 400-800 that says how good your credit is. It will cost some money to see this number, because banks and credit agencies use formulas to compute it.

It’s true. You can get one free a year but even if you need more than 1 it will not affect your credit score if you are doing the inquiry, only if a financial institution does the inquiry.
